Sum insured and sub-limits
Check the total cover, disease-specific limits, room eligibility and any procedure caps. A sub-limit can leave part of a bill payable by you.

A policy may cover eligible hospital expenses subject to its terms, limits, waiting periods, exclusions and claim rules. Two plans with similar premiums can work differently when a claim occurs. Read the policy wording and Customer Information Sheet (CIS), not only the brochure.
Learn the essentials
Use this checklist when reviewing a new policy or an existing one.
Check the total cover, disease-specific limits, room eligibility and any procedure caps. A sub-limit can leave part of a bill payable by you.
Review initial, specified-disease and pre-existing-condition waiting periods, including the exact definitions and applicable policy terms.
Understand the share you may have to pay, when a deductible applies and whether room-category limits can affect eligible claim amounts.
Read what is not covered, permanent exclusions, conditions and disclosure requirements. Give accurate information in the proposal form.
Cashless treatment is subject to insurer/TPA processes, hospital network and policy terms. Reimbursement claims require records and proof; neither process guarantees full payment.
Possible reasons include non-payable items, co-pay, deductibles, limits, exclusions, uncovered treatment, room-related deductions or expenses above eligible amounts. Ask for an itemised bill and written claim explanation.
Protect your future self
Health insurance is financial protection against eligible medical expenses—not a promise that every hospital bill will be paid.
A serious illness or accident can create large bills quickly. A suitable policy may pay eligible expenses up to its terms, limits and sum insured, helping protect savings from some medical shocks.
Renewing on time can preserve continuity-related benefits under applicable rules and policy terms. A break can affect waiting-period credits and may leave you without cover for events occurring during the gap.
If you wait until a diagnosis or hospitalisation, a new policy may be unavailable, cost more, or have underwriting decisions and waiting periods. Buying earlier does not guarantee acceptance or cover for every condition.
Important: choose cover you can afford to renew. Check the policy schedule and wording for actual benefits, waiting periods, exclusions, co-payments and limits. Do not stop an existing policy until replacement cover is formally accepted and you understand any loss of continuity.
Before you buy
Use this checklist before submitting a proposal or paying the premium.
Tell the insurer about medical history, symptoms, investigations, medicines, prior advice, past claims and existing policies as requested. Keep a copy of the proposal form and all answers.
Ask for the Customer Information Sheet (CIS), full policy wording and benefit schedule. Confirm waiting periods, room/ICU limits, disease sub-limits, co-pay, deductible, exclusions and non-payable items.
Check the current network for hospitals you may use, pre-authorisation requirements, emergency procedures, claim documents and the insurer's grievance officer.
Compare the same sum insured, family composition, age, deductible, co-pay, add-ons and policy year. Check renewal terms and affordability over time—not just the first-year premium.
Non-disclosure or inaccurate answers can cause disputes, claim rejection or other consequences under the contract and applicable law. Ask for clarification if a question is unclear.
A low premium can come with trade-offs such as higher cost-sharing, limits, exclusions or a narrower network. A high premium alone does not prove better claims service.
Cashless approval is not a guarantee of the entire bill being paid. Non-payable items, co-pay, deductibles, exclusions and amounts above limits may remain payable by you.
Track renewal dates and keep payment proof. Before switching, understand portability, continuity credits, fresh underwriting and when the new policy actually starts.
IRDAI's health insurance guidance specifically advises disclosing pre-existing conditions, reading the terms, checking limits/waiting periods/exclusions and understanding the CIS. Read IRDAI's health insurance guidance.
Company research
Health policies may be offered by IRDAI-registered standalone health insurers, general insurers and, for specified benefit-based products, life insurers. The authorised list can change; use the regulator's current list rather than a stale company count.
View IRDAI health insurer information → Open insurance statistics handbook →
IRDAI's Handbook on Indian Insurance Statistics publishes annual data. The latest listed edition should be checked before quoting a company count, market share, incurred-claims ratio or claims-settlement metric. A count of standalone health insurers is not the same as the number of all insurers selling health products.
Check the exact metric definition, period, claim count or amount basis, and whether figures include retail/group or health/other lines. Different ratios are not interchangeable.
Indicates claims incurred relative to premium on the reported basis. It is not, by itself, a score for an individual customer's probability of getting a claim paid.
Compare complaints using a stated period and denominator where official data allows; review grievance handling, escalation routes, network access and service processes.
Review official disclosures and solvency information, but also check whether the policy's actual benefits and limitations fit your needs. No single statistic identifies the best insurer for everyone.
SheildAxis will show company-by-company figures only when the underlying official report is available, the reporting period and definition are stated, and the figures can be compared fairly. No unsupported insurer ranking is presented here.
Compare policies
Fill this using the current Customer Information Sheet, policy wording and quote for each product. A product name or marketing brochure is not enough.

If something goes wrong
Keep the policy number, claim/pre-authorisation reference, hospital bills, discharge summary, insurer/TPA correspondence and the written reason for any deduction or rejection.
Submit a written complaint to the insurer's Grievance Redressal Officer (GRO). Ask for a complaint reference and keep copies. Use the contact details published by the insurer.
If the insurer does not respond or you remain dissatisfied, check the current official escalation instructions and register/track the grievance through Bima Bharosa.

Before deciding
What are the waiting periods, room limits, co-pay, exclusions, restoration rules, network hospitals and renewal conditions?
Is the hospital in-network? What pre-authorisation is needed? Which expenses may not be payable? Confirm directly with the insurer/TPA.
Ask for the written reason for any deduction or rejection, preserve records, and follow the insurer's grievance process before escalating to the appropriate official channel.
